Artist Statement

My work is an attempt to make an interior world visible. We all carry a rich, private inner life that no one else can ever really see. I try to make my inner world visible in the work, hoping it sparks memory or imagination.

I'm a maximalist in terms of my materials and love building history through layers of paint. I favor irregular over symmetrical, layered over flat. Line runs through everything, sometimes painted, sometimes found in the negative space between shapes; it's what carries the eye and the energy through the work.

I begin my paintings with explorative play, letting color, texture, and the movement of my tools guide me. This usually builds into something uncomfortable, a tension I've learned to trust rather than resist. I will often sit with my work, sometimes for days, until something clicks. It might be the color story, the composition, or the theme emerging. I know a piece is done when my body feels settled and the urge to add evaporates.

Brita Nordin is an abstract painter based in Exeter, New Hampshire, whose work explores interior landscapes and what lives beneath the surface: memories, emotions, imagination. Her work is rich with texture, layers, and color.

Brita’s early study of philosophy and music tapped into a deep curiosity about the unseen that drives her art practice. She has studied through the Milan Art Institute, the Creative Visionary program, and under Pauline Jans.

Her work has been shown at the Seacoast Art Association. She is currently exploring color and light as shaped by the seasons in New Hampshire.

Brita balances her painting practice with raising two children and working in music technology.
