Reflections
There are seasons when life is full in all the best ways.
I genuinely love the life I get to live. Much of it has been shaped with intention but in reality I’m also incredibly lucky. I have a family I cherish, meaningful work, and the opportunity to pursue painting, something that fulfills me in ways I never expected.
But even a life you love can become noisy.
There are the emotions we carry for the people we care about, the challenges that inevitably arise, and the constant stream of news and uncertainty that seems impossible to escape. Over time, I realized how much of that noise I was absorbing. I found myself looking for somewhere quite where I could simply breathe.
At the time, I didn’t have an escape hatch. I eventually did take a solo retreat which I share about another time, but before that physical refuge I discovered another one.
Reflections became an imaged place where I could reclaim my mind and body. Through meditation, journaling, and the slow rhythm of painting an emotional landscape began to emerge. This was the place I needed to exist, if only in my mind and in this painting.
The light reminds me dusk, when one day has ended but another one hasn’t quite begun. I love those moments of transition. They feel suspended outside of time, inviting stillness and a connection to something larger than myself.
I love the olive greens in this painting which feel familiar and grounded. They seem to breathe alongside the warm yellows and peaches. Beneath the surface are the remnants of earlier decisions. I very rarely erase the past completely in my work. The texture remains and I think it adds a lot of depth of complexity to the painting.
As I create abstract landscape art, I’m less interested in depicting a destination than in capturing an inner experience. I hope each painting offers a space for you to slow down and discover your own emotional landscape.
Reflections represents the possibility of peace.
Life isn’t going to become any quieter. But I can find moments of stillness within it.
