Welcome to My Studio

You’ve found your way here, welcome!

This blog is an invitation into my studio and into the thoughts, places, and experiences that shape my paintings. Here you’ll find stories behind new work, pages from my sketchbooks, works in progress, and reflections on the moments that often become the beginning of a new painting.

The landscapes around us and within us

People often assume my paintings are about the landscapes they recognize: a mountain ridge, a winding trail, the shifting light across a marsh. This is often where they begin.

But somewhere between the walk in nature and the canvas, those places morph. They mingle with memories, emotions, reflections, and imagination until they become something less like a specific location and more like a feeling.

I’ve come to realize that I’m not trying to recreate a place as much as explore what it leaves behind inside me.

We all carry landscapes within us. Places that shaped us. Places we return to in memories. Places that become symbols of comfort, change, hope, or inspiration. Those are the landscapes I’m most interested in exploring through paint.

As a nature artist, I’m continually inspired by the conversation between the outer world and the inner one. My paintings live somewhere in that space between observation and imagination.

Inside the process

My paintings always begin with exploration. I love playing with color in my sketchbooks, making marks with non-traditional tools (like sticks and spatulas), and observing how different art materials mix together to form new textures.

I never know how a painting will turn out when I begin. I love that about the work. The process is about following my intuition and responding to what the painting is telling me it wants. It sounds a little nutty, but that’s how it works.

There are layers that disappear beneath the new ones, unexpected marks become essentials, and moments where the painting reveals it’s focal point. Learning to trust this process has become one of the greatest gifts painting has given me.

Here I’ll share that journey. Yes, you’ll see finished work but you’ll also see the experimentations, discoveries, and surprises that happen along the way.

Join me!

Thank you for spending a few moments here. If these reflections speak to you, I’d love to stay connected.

I send occasional newsletters from the studio featuring new paintings, stories behind the work, and upcoming events. They’re thoughtful rather than frequent and they’re the first place I share what’s new.

If that sounds like something you might enjoy, I’d love for you to join me!

Welcome! I look forward to sharing this journey with you
